Lipid Profile and Leptin Levels in Patients with Metabolic Syndrome
Authors
Abstract:
Abstract Background and Objective: Metabolic syndrome called a cluster of several metabolic disorders is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. Genetic differences in leptin receptor gene are related with the concentration and activity of leptin in that these discrepancies can influence lipid levels. We aimed to determine the association between the leptin receptor gene polymorphism on serum lipid profile and leptin activity in metabolic syndrome patients. Material and Methods: This case-control study was conducted on 200 patients with metabolic syndrome and 200 healthy individuals. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphisms (RFLP) were used to determine genotypic distribution and allelic frequencies of polymorphisms, respectively. The plasma leptin activity was measured by a kit in a fluorescence spectrometer, and Lipid concentration by routine biochemical and enzymatic assays. Results: Two groups had significant differences in all measured factors such as lipid profiles, fast blood sugar, waist circumference, blood pressure and leptin concentration (P< 0.05). Conclusion: Given that the two groups had significant differences in blood and body measurements, no role of K656N polymorphism was observed. Overall, Lys656Asn (K656N) polymorphism of leptin receptor gene is not associated with serum lipid profile and leptin activity with metabolic syndrome. Ghrelin, Resistin and Leptin Levels in Patients with Metabolic Syndrome
Aim: This study was designed to compare the fasting ghrelin, leptin and resistin levels between metabolic syndrome (MS) patients with healthy controls. Method: This trial was performed on 21 patients with MS (7 men; mean age, 44±4 years) and 17 healthy controls (8 men; mean age, 43±3 years). Diagnosis of MS was defined based on National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) Adult Treatment Panel...

The Effect of Dark Chocolate Consumption on Lipid Profile in Patients with Metabolic Syndrome: A Randomized Clinical Trial
Objective: Patients with metabolic syndrome are prone to cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Regarding the importance of nutritional factors in management of metabolic syndrome, this study was designed to evaluate the effects of dark chocolate consumption on serum lipid profile in patients with metabolic syndrome. Materials and Methods: In this randomized clinical trial, 114 patients with met...
full textLipid profile and oxidized lipoprotein levels in patients with acute myeloid leukemia
Background: Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is blood and bone marrow malignancy. Low-density oxidative lipoprotein (oxLDL) is a pro-inflammatory factor that has free radicals in its structure. OxLDL levels are also rising in diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and some cancers. Studies have shown that oxLDL and dyslipidemia are more common in patients with various cancers. This stud...
full textClinical Significance of Serum TNF-a and IL-6 Levels in Patients with Metabolic Syndrome
Background: Several components of metabolic syndrome (MetS) facilitate its diagnosis, including abdominal obesity, hyperlipidemia, high blood pressure, and insulin resistance. The production of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and interleukin 6 (IL-6) seem to be associated with MetS components. The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between the serum levels...
full textMetabolic Syndrome in Patients with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome in Iran
Background The prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) has been studied in different populations, but their results were so controversial regarding Iranian women. These controversial data indicated the need for more investigation of MetS characteristics in PCOS patients in our population. So this study aimed to evaluate the clinical and laboratory characteris...
